Snailspace Brighton | The Martlets

I’m excited to be one of 50 artists chosen to decorate a snail on the Snailspace Brighton art trail.

My snail was outside The Ivy in the Lanes - my amazing sponsors - between 15 September and 18 November 2018. It’s now joining all the other snails at St Augustine’s Centre for a farewell celebration Fri 30 November - Sun 2 December. [Tickets here.] There’s also a ‘meet the artist’ preview on Thursday 28 - I’d love to see you there! [Tickets here.] Want to snap up one of the snails? On Mon 3 December, the snails will be auctioned off to raise money for The Martlets hospice in Brighton. [Tickets here.]

Inspiration

I love spending time with my family at our allotment in Whitehawk. The hours I’ve spent there definitely inspired my snail design. I called it ‘To Everything There is a Season’, as when you move around the sculpture you move through the seasons. All the plants are bee-friendly, too - I’m really passionate about the importance of saving our native bees. Hopefully my design will make people stop and think about the importance of looking after our local plants.

From concept to sculpture

My snail is illustrated completely by hand using acrylic paints and Posca pens. It took eight weeks in the super secret Martlets Snailspace HQ.
